Debt-to-income
See what share of gross monthly income goes to debt payments.
How this estimate works
Debt-to-income percentage = (housing payment + other monthly debt payments) ÷ gross monthly income × 100.
This scenario includes your housing payment plus other required debt payments. Gross income is before deductions. It is not a credit assessment or lending decision; lender definitions and included obligations vary.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Bring the right numbers.
Estimates are enough to explore. Keep every money amount in the same
selected currency.
01
Gross monthly income before deductions.
02
A single monthly housing payment.
03
Other required debt payments, excluding the housing payment already entered.
MAKE THE RESULT USEFUL
What to look for.
Use income and required payments from the same month, and count each payment once. This ratio uses gross income, so it does not show the cash left after taxes and living expenses. Use the budget tool for that view.
Your calculator inputs are not included in your inquiry.
TRY ANOTHER SCENARIO
Change one thing.
Notice the difference.
Change one monthly debt payment while keeping income unchanged. Compare the ratio, then review your full monthly budget; this percentage does not include all living costs.
Changing inputs here does not send them to Matt or save them between
visits.
A FEW THINGS YOU MAY BE WONDERING
Good questions.
Clear answers.
Is this the ratio a lender will use?
Not necessarily. Lenders can use different income definitions and payment rules. This calculator includes the housing payment and other debt payments you enter; it does not estimate approval or eligibility.
What if my income is zero?
A ratio cannot be calculated with zero income. The tool shows no ratio rather than an infinite percentage. A ratio above 100% is possible when entered payments exceed gross income.
