How this estimate works
Target = essential monthly expenses × coverage months. Gap = target − current savings, with a minimum of zero.
Include essential bills and required debt payments. Choose coverage for your situation; the example is not a recommendation. No interest or investment growth is included.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Bring the right numbers.
Estimates are enough to explore. Keep every money amount in the same
selected currency.
01
The essential expenses you want the buffer to cover.
02
The number of months you want to explore.
03
Cash savings already set aside for emergencies.
MAKE THE RESULT USEFUL
What to look for.
Use essential expenses rather than your total income. Compare different coverage periods, then review the gap between your chosen target and current cash savings. The example coverage is a starting value, not a recommendation.
Your calculator inputs are not included in your inquiry.
TRY ANOTHER SCENARIO
Change one thing.
Notice the difference.
Compare two coverage periods while keeping expenses unchanged. Look at both the target and the gap still to fund; the target is not the amount you still need to save.
Changing inputs here does not send them to Matt or save them between
visits.
A FEW THINGS YOU MAY BE WONDERING
Good questions.
Clear answers.
Does the calculator choose how many months I need?
No. You choose the coverage period. The example uses three months only to demonstrate the arithmetic; the right target depends on your circumstances.
What if I have already saved more than the target?
The remaining gap is zero and the progress meter stops at 100%. Your entered savings are not reduced. You can explore a different coverage period without changing the saved amount.
